Co-creation Center for Future Science Systems — Director

Masaru Kitsuregawa

Artificial intelligence is advancing faster than ever, and it is changing how we do research and education. Large language models keep improving, and generative AI is now part of everyday work. Any researcher, with the help of advanced AI, can now push into the Frontier of Knowledge. At the same time, this multifaceted, fast-accelerating pace of change risks undermining social trust and the security of critical infrastructure. No single university or research institution can keep up with this pace alone.

It is we — the Research Organization of Information and Systems (ROIS) — who track the cutting-edge trends of AI with accuracy. We share that knowledge, together with our infrastructure, with universities and research institutions across Japan, and together we pioneer new research areas. The Co-creation Center for Future Science Systems is where this work happens.

Think of the Center as ROIS’s own “Dejima” — the island in Nagasaki that once connected Japan with the rest of the world. It connects researchers who build AI with researchers who use it, and it connects researchers from Japan and overseas. The National Institute of Informatics builds large language models from scratch. The Institute of Statistical Mathematics strengthens the mathematical foundations behind AI models. The National Institute of Genetics and the National Institute of Polar Research put them to work at the cutting edge of research. In this manner, combining “the research that builds” with “the research that extends” is one of our greatest strengths.

The Center is also the strategic base where we swiftly and flexibly put our strategy into action. We have already done this for AI-Empowered Life Science, Secure Infrastructure for AI, and Law of AI and by AI— spotting a promising research idea, nurturing it, and turning it into a full research center, seizing the moment. We will keep turning the cross-disciplinary challenges of the generative AI era into reality, one after another.

AI is not just a tool. It is now the foundational technology that is transforming research methodology itself. The Co-creation Center for Future Science Systems takes a comprehensive view of data, models, computing infrastructure, and even institutional design — and, while ensuring safety and reliability, connects all of this to real-world implementation in society. This Center is where Co-creation makes it possible.

From here, our “Dejima,” we will keep opening new paths toward the next Frontier of Knowledge. As an inter-university research institute, we will keep building the foundation for AI-era research together with researchers across Japan.

We look forward to co-creating this future with you.
